1855 C-1 Half Cent, PR65 Red and Brown
One of the Finest Certified
1855 1/2 C C-1, B-1, R.5 as a Proof, PR65 Red and Brown NGC.
Ex: Pittman. Red obverse surfaces are complemented with steel-blue
on the highlights. The reverse concentrates the Mint Red at the
center, with steel-blue and additional reddish hues encircling the
center. Abrasions are nearly nonexistent, as is any evidence of
striking weakness. The Pittman pedigree is noted on the NGC Gen 7
holder.The 1855 proof half cent has one of the lowest proportions of Red and Brown certifications of any non-proof only Braided Hair half cent, at only about one-quarter of certifications. Surrounding dates congregate in the one-third to one-half range. Full Red examples of this date are prohibitively rare, with only three certifications at PCGS and none at NGC (7/25). No Red and Brown examples have been graded above the PR65 level, tying the present example for the finest certified at this level and finest numerically overall.
