Description
1834 Bust Half Dollar, O-111, MS66
Small Date, Small Letters
Attractive Premium Gem
1834 50C Small Date, Small Letters, O-111, R.1, MS66 NGC.
Overton does not identify die states for the O-111 die marriage,
although this example has evidence of flow lines to the rim from
the stars on the obverse and lettering on the reverse, indicating a
middle die stage. The 1834 O-111 has been called the Child's Head
variety for rounded cheeks and wide-eyed appearance. Chief Engraver
William Kneass experimented with font sizes in 1834, and
additionally master die and hub modification by Kneass would change
the appearance of Miss Liberty. The letter I is well right under
the T in STATES, identifying this Small Letters reverse, and stars
6 and 7 are recut at upper points to attribute this Small Date
obverse for the O-111 die pairing.Wonderful golden gray toning on the obverse, lighter at the centers, transitioning to darker hues towards the rim with gold, gray, and olive hues. The reverse has the same coloration but slightly lighter, with gold hues being more vivid. Frosty luster radiates throughout the pristine surfaces of this exceptional coin. The strike is solid, with some weakness in the hair curls above the ear, and feathers of the eagle's right wing root, but the stars are sharp, along with having well-defined features on the portrait. This is among the finest specimens available for the 1834 O-111 variety, and the coin would also make a superb Capped Bust half dollar type coin.
