1795 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar, AU58
B-9, BB-13, Finest at NGC
1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Two Leaves, B-9, BB-13, R.4, AU58 NGC.
Ex: The Peh Family Collection. Bowers Die State I. R.3. This die
marriage is considered very scarce by most specialists today. This
coin was struck from an early state of the dies, before the dies
clashed. Star 15 is tucked under the tip of Liberty's bust. The
reverse die employs 17 berries in the wreath (nine on the left
branch, eight on the right), and was used to strike two die
marriages (BB-13 and BB-14). This example displays light to
medium-gray toning throughout the obverse and reverse. A die
centering dot is clearly seen under Liberty's ear. The coin was
struck on a microporous planchet and exhibits a pair of lateral
planchet flaws that are seen at the base of the bust -- a future
pedigree identifier on this conditionally rare coin. Light
adjustment marks crisscross the lower obverse as struck. This coin
remains the finest B-9, BB-13 dollar certified by NGC and PCGS
reports a single AU58+ example (7/25).. Apparently no Mint State
BB-13 coins survive, with this coin described as #2 on the Bowers'
Encyclopedia list of Notable Specimens.Ex: ANA Signature (Heritage, 7/2005), lot 10236.
