1795 Silver Dollar, AU53
B-5, BB-27, Three Leaves
Pleasing Flowing Hair Type
1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Three Leaves, B-5, BB-27, R.1, AU53
NGC. Ex: The Peh Family Collection. Bowers Die State III. This
is the most commonly encountered 1795 die variety, easily
attributed by the bold, angled die scratch behind Liberty's head
seen on virtually all examples. The coin is sharp around the
peripheries on both sides, yet the centers are weakly defined -- a
combination of strike and circulation wear. The BB-27 portrait was
deeply impressed into the die, resulting in higher relief and the
upper hair strands quickly wore away in circulation. The fact that
this coin was struck slightly off-center may have contributed to
the uneven strike. Light silver-gray toning deepens to medium
lilac-gray toward the borders. The reverse shows bits of grease
residue that were struck into the planchet at the time of
manufacture. Overall, this is an outstanding and original Flowing
Hair dollar that will be a strong addition to any early dollar
collection, also serving as an excellent Three Leaves type
