Deep Mirror Prooflike Capped Die Variety
1879-CC $1 Capped Die, VAM-3, MS63 Deep Mirror Prooflike
PCGS. A Top 100 Variety. Fantastically frosty fields contrast
colossally with cool-steel devices. Abrasions are few for the
grade, and only a couple around IN GOD WE TRUST warrant individual
mention, although even those barely so. The faintest hint of
striking weakness is confined to the ear and hair strands directly
above as well as the eagle's breast. The Capped Die does not refer
to a die cap error, but to disturbances around the mintmark. While
it was originally thought to be die rust, these defects were made
to conceal the incorrect use of a Small CC mintmark.Coin Index Numbers: (Variety PCGS# 40777, Base PCGS# 97089, Greysheet# 213687)
