Description
Desirable "Una and the Lion" 5 Pounds Ex. Slaney
Victoria gold Proof "Una and the Lion" 5 Pounds 1839 PR62 Deep
Cameo PCGS, KM742, S-3851, W&R-278 (R4), Marsh-F23 (R3).
Medal alignment. DIRIGE legend. Small lettered edge. 6 scrolls and
11 leaves. By William Wyon. One of William Wyon's most celebrated,
and perhaps most famous, engraving designs, the iconic and
widely-known Una and the Lion is presented here in a stunning Deep
Cameo. Though easily recognizable, the design never fails to create
awe and appreciation for numismatic skill and British artistry.
This 1839 example is graded at an appreciable near-Choice
designation, and even while light chatter tempers the grade, it
does little to take away from the exceptional aesthetic appeal of
the central motifs. A true prize for an advanced collector hoping
to attain one of the most iconic issues of British numismatics.Ex. Slaney Collection (Spink Auction 15031, May 2015, Lot 418)
Formed with exceptional care and significant investment between 1940 and 1960, the Slaney Collection included many coins with distinguished provenances, some tracing back as far as the 18th century. With several major collections dispersed during that period, Slaney acquired an extraordinary range of rarities across hammered and milled coinage, in both gold and silver. According to the previous cataloger, this particular selection was acquired to the Slaney Collection from Baldwins in 1944.
