Description

1872 Three Dollar Gold, PR64 Cameo
JD-1, Seldom Offered Date in Proof Format

1872 $3 JD-1, High R.6, PR64 Cameo PCGS. In a time when a few favored collectors and dealers had connections within the Mint, a reported 30-piece 1872 proof mintage was accomplished. A small number of extra proofs may have been struck later in the year. Today, the proofs remain rare, with about 14 to 16 pieces known. With such a low survivorship, most 1872 proofs are tightly held in old collections. This near-Gem Cameo example is beautifully mirrored and smoothly frosted on the raised elements. A needle-sharp strike exists on both the obverse and the reverse, with the reverse rotated clockwise about 20° in relation to the obverse. Vibrant orange-gold color offers excellent eye appeal. PCGS Population: 5 in 64 (1 in 64+) Cameo, 1 finer (8/25).
