1879 Three Dollar Gold Piece, PR65 Cameo
Rarely Seen Proof Date
JD-1, The Confirmed Proof Dies

1879 $3 JD-1, R.6, PR65 Cameo NGC. John Dannreuther's research concludes 14 to 18 1879 three dollar proofs exist from a reported 30-piece proof mintage. The 1879 proofs utilize the obverse die from 1877 and 1878, with distinctive die characteristics including prominent die lumps in the hair and on the neck and a diagnostic wavy die line on the nose. In theory, the 3,000 1879 circulation strikes employ a different obverse, yet Heritage's archive includes several certified proofs that do not match either the obverse or the reverse proof dies. Subtle differences in the date position help identify the true proofs. This PR65 Cameo checks all the boxes for a bonafide 1879 proof. A few faint obverse hairlines mingle with die polish lines within the obverse fields. The richly frosted devices offer bold contrast upon the watery-mirrored, orange-gold fields. The strike is decidedly sharp throughout both the obverse and the reverse. NGC Census: 5 in 65 Cameo (1 in 65 ), 0 finer (8/25).
