Description
1799 Small Obverse Stars Eagle, MS64
Rare BD-6 Dies, CAC Approved
The Sole Second Finest Known
1799 $10 Small Obverse Stars, BD-6, R.5, MS64 NGC. CAC.
Bass-Dannreuther Die State e/b. The 1799 is one of the most
plentiful dates in the early eagle series, ideal for type
collectors. However, it becomes an extreme challenge when
collecting examples either by die variety, or in high grade. While
Choice and Gem-quality 1799 eagles are more accessible than those
of many other issues in the series, they are still rare at auction,
and most such coins represent the two most plentiful varieties:
BD-7 and BD-10. Any other variety of the 1799 eagle is a major
rarity overall, and especially at the Choice or better level.BD-6 is a rare variety but is among the more often seen of the non-BD-7 Small Stars die pairings. John Dannreuther, in Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties, provides a survival estimate for BD-6 of only 35 to 45 pieces in all grades. Most of these pieces are in circulated grades, and the majority of the Mint State coins known are on the low end of the spectrum in MS61 or MS62. The finest BD-6 example known is the Bass Core Collection MS65 PCGS coin, which we sold in our 2023 FUN Signature auction of its namesake collection for $216,000. The next finest example is the present MS64 NGC CAC specimen, followed by a lone MS63 PCGS coin.
This stunning piece displays thoroughly reflective fields and rich orange-gold color, with reddish accents in the margins. An exact strike visits the border stars and central devices, and only light marks over each side prevent consideration of an even finer grade. A long diagonal adjustment mark across the horizontal shield lines on the reverse will serve as a pedigree marker. The advanced early eagle specialist should not let this piece pass by. Census: 4 in 64, 1 finer. CAC: 4 in 64, 0 finer (8/25).
