Description

1799 Draped Bust Ten Dollar, MS62
Sharp Strike, Nicely Toned BD-10

1799 $10 Large Obverse Stars, BD-10, R.3, MS62 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a, with no clashing, no lapping, and no die cracks on either side. The Large Obverse Stars from a new punch are only found on two of the ten 1799 eagle die marriages, the very rare BD-9, and the more frequently encountered BD-10 which is attributed on the reverse with the lowest berry being under the right foot of A in AMERICA. The shield of this reverse distinctively has no spines at its upper corners, as astutely observed by Harry Bass. This reverse die was also a workhorse, additionally used on the single die pairing that struck all of the 1800 ten dollar coins, along with 1801 BD-1.

This specimen is sharply struck, with the obverse stars crisply formed, and the fine detail of the hair curls skillfully engraved by Robert Scot are well detailed. The reverse has excellent definition in the eagle wing, neck, and breast feathers, along with other design elements of the reverse. Small contact marks are sparsely scattered on both sides, and some hairlines are present, but less than usually seen for the grade. Attractive honey-gold toning over satiny luster evenly blankets the obverse and reverse sides, enriching the eye appeal of this alluring coin. All of these desirable qualities make this early eagle a strong candidate for a great type coin of the iconic Draped Bust Heraldic Eagle ten dollar gold.
