1857-O Double Eagle, AU50
Scarce New Orleans Mint Issue
1857-O $20 AU50 NGC. Winter-1. A single die pair struck the
entire 30,000-piece mintage of the scarce-but-available 1857 New
Orleans twenty. This About Uncirculated example was prooflike when
it left the Mint, although its time spent in circulation resulted
in tiny marks and abrasions throughout the surfaces. Reflectivity
survives around the obverse stars and the reverse motifs. The New
Orleans Mint continued to operate with multiple problems including
gold bullion sources and production quality issues. As a result,
the 1857-O date is often weakly struck and baggy. While this coin
is sharper than many, weakness at Liberty's neck curls and hair bun
exists and the date shows a slightly shallow impression. Green-gold
color retains a measure of mint luster especially where prooflike
