1850 Mormon Five Dollar, XF45
K-5, Scarce Date

1850 $5 Mormon Five Dollar XF45 NGC. K-5, High R.5. The Deseret community settled in the Salt Lake City valley established its own private mint in 1848, under the supervision of Brigham Young, and 1849-dated gold pieces were struck in denominations face-valued equivalently to the federal quarter eagle, half eagle, eagle, and double eagle (not coined by the United States until 1850), however, the Mormon gold pieces were of inferior intrinsic value, and eventually most were melted down, rendering any Mormon gold piece scarce today, and some issues rare. The typical Mormon gold piece seen in from the 1849-dated production, but small quantities of five dollar pieces were struck later, using dies dated 1850, and then again in 1860 using dies with an entirely different design. The 1850 five dollar piece is rare. It is believed that only 50 to 75 pieces survive in all grades.

This Choice XF example displays mostly uniform olive-gold and deep amber patina over smooth surfaces with light wear. Bits of circulation grime still cling to portions of the peripheral legends. The strike is uneven from misaligned dies, rendering the right-hand margin on each side poorly defined -- a phenomenon seen on several examples of the Kagin-5 issue. Listed on page 402 of the 2026 Guide Book.
