Description
1877 Morgan Ten Dollar in Copper
Judd-1545, PR64 Red and Brown
Ex: Conrad Bolt
1877 $10 Ten Dollar, Judd-1545, Pollock-1718, Low R.7, PR64 Red
and Brown PCGS. Ex: The Peh Family Collection. A bust of
Liberty reminiscent of the familiar George T. Morgan design faces
left on the obverse with E PLURIBUS UNUM around the periphery and
the date below. Liberty wears a Phrygian cap inscribed with
LIBERTY. The reverse is also similar to the issued Morgan dollar,
except TEN DOL. is at the bottom. Struck in copper with a reeded
edge. The sole Judd variety for this die pair, as none were struck
with a plain edge or in a different alloy, although five of the ten
examples known to Saul Teichman were subsequently gilt. This
original Choice pattern displays rich fire-red color. The open
fields and highpoints are deep steel-gray. The strike is good, and
a small obverse spot at 1 o'clock serves to identify the
specimen.Ex: Dr. Conrad A. Bolt Collection (Stack's, 4/1966), lot 1705; FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2006), lot 3711.
