Description
1842-C Five Dollar, AU Details
Large Date, Vibrant Colors
1842-C $5 Large Date -- Cleaned -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details.
Winter-1. The Charlotte Mint struck just 23,589 half eagles in
1842, and today it is a conditionally rare issue as PCGS shows a
sparse nine examples in Mint State (9/25). AU-level pieces are
highly soft after due to the limited availability of finer coins. A
light cleaning has removed areas of luster on the device high
points and denied a numeric grade from PCGS. However, any cleaning
probably happened long ago and the current state exhibits
inoffensive orange-gold patina with subtle lilac and sky-blue
overtones. This piece is well-struck save for softness around stars
1 and 2 and on the upper reverse denticles. Faint hints of
reflectivity in the fields boosts the overall visual presentation,
which is pleasing.
