Sophia as Regent for Ivan V & Peter I gold Novodel 2/3 Ducat ND (1682-1689) MS63 NGC, Fr-59a, Kaim-1858. 2.17gm. A fascinating piece of Russian numismatic history, featuring the sole portrait of Sophia Alekseyevna, who served as Regent of Russia while co-Czars (and half brothers) Ivan V and Peter I (featured together on the reverse) were still children, immediately following the death of the previous Czar Feodor III in 1682. During this period of Sophia's regency (1682-1689), Peter I, her half-brother, grew into adulthood and gradually seized greater political influence and control of Russia. This design was produced as a fractional Ducat issue as well as a full Ducat piece, both being quite scarce; Heritage actually has yet to offer an example of either before this sale. The renderings of the finer details on this specimen are impressive, as quite a few representatives exhibit some degree of softness to one or more of the three portraits.
