Russia: Peter II gold Ducat 1729 AU Details (Damaged) NGC,...
Description
Remarkably Scarce Peter II Ducat
Peter II gold Ducat 1729 AU Details (Damaged) NGC, Moscow
mint, KM186, Bitkin-6 (R2), Fr-102. 3.47gm. No Ribbon in Hair, 5
Scallops variety. An exceedingly rare Russian Ducat, produced for
only a single year during Peter II's brief tenure as ruler of
Russia. On only one previous occasion has this storied type been
offered through Heritage, the Eric P. Newman (Ex. Colonel Green)
specimen that realized just over $200,000 in 2014 (in an NGC AU50
holder). Using the slight divot to the right of the pellet above
Peter's head on the obverse as a diagnostic, we were able to trace
the present specimen back to the Russian Classics Collection sold
through Superior in 2004. Oddly enough, at the time of that sale
this piece was housed in a problem-free AU55 holder from NGC (they
must have felt that what has now been labeled as damage to be an
as-struck irregularity in the flan). Nevertheless, this is a
storied piece of Russian numismatic history showing an excellent
degree of detail. Given that this type seems to have only appeared
at auction a handful of times worldwide in the past decade, we
think the collector response to this occasion could be
substantial.Ex. The Russian Classics Collection (Superior Galleries, January 2004, Lot 5015); Willy Fuchs Collection (Sotheby's, April 1996, Lot 140)

AU Details (Damaged) NGC。
