Description

1799 7x6 Stars Draped Bust Dollar, VF25
B-21, BB-169, Scarce Early Die State

1799 $1 7x6 Stars, B-21, BB-169, R.3, VF25 PCGS. CAC. Bowers Die State II, a rare early die state. This smoothly worn, well-defined VF25 dollar richly deserves its CAC endorsement. The coin is free of adjustment marks or post-Mint detractions, with medium-gray surfaces that lighten to silver-gray at the high points for strong, natural eye appeal. A newly formed die crack appears through 99 in the date to Liberty's drapery, characterizing this early die state. Most BB-169 examples display numerous anomalies and die cracks typical of later die stages. The present piece has bold rims and well-formed dentils that accompany virtually mark-free surfaces -- unexpected for the assigned VF25 grade.
