Republic gold 20 Soles 1863/9 LIMA-YB AU58 NGC, Lima mint, KM194 (overdate unlisted), Fr-70 (same). A fascinating die variety featuring a, perhaps inexplicable, blunder in the last digit of the date; showing characteristics of both a "3" and a "9". Given that this is a one year issue dated 1863, the 3 makes sense, but the presence of a 9 does not (considering the present level of mint information known). Nevertheless, the only other example of this variety to sell with Heritage realized a whopping $36,000; that piece being of the same grade as the present example, an AU58, but PCGS graded, who characterized the variety as a 1869/3 instead of 1863/9. One of only two certified specimens of this controversial but exciting type currently in existence.Metal: Gold
