Description

Sole Finest 1906 Kuping Tael

Kuang-hsü gold Specimen Pattern Kuping Tael (Liang) CD 1906 SP64+ PCGS, Tientsin mint, KM-Pn301, L&M-1023, Chang Foundation-5 (this coin), Kann-1540, WS-0006. Plain edge. An offering that knows virtually no equal, whose rarity and level of preservation propel this specimen to an elite tier within the greater Chinese series. Struck towards the tail end of Kuang-hsü's prolific reign by the Ministry of Revenue as one of a handful of attempts at monetary reform, the piece on display glistens at even the slightest flick of the wrist. Lavishly and carefully struck as one expects from a Pattern, with every cloud swirl and dragon scale decidedly crisp. Ample flash abounds the obverse, while the reverse displays a pleasing juxtaposition of die polish and gentle frost with only the most trivial of contact marks to preclude a deserving Gem assignment. Of the 1906 issues, the current specimen ranks as the sole finest, and among the entire Kuping Tael series of 1906 and 1907, maintains the second finest spot by a half-point, outperforming 60 additional examples straight-graded between both grading services, and is surely qualified for only the most advanced cabinets.
