Republic Yuan Shih-kai "Plumed Hat" Dollar Year 3 (1914) MS66
PCGS, Tientsin mint, KM-Y322, L&M-858, Kann-642,
Chang-CH214, WS-0094. 39mm. Struck in 1914 to mark the founding of
the Republic of China and Yuan Shih-kai's formal assumption of
power as Provisional President-an event that consolidated his
control following the fall of the Qing dynasty and set the stage
for his controversial later attempt to restore monarchy. Designed
by Luigi Giorgi, chief engraver at the Tientsin Mint, the piece
features an expertly rendered portrait capturing the austere
authority of Yuan's early presidency. A visually striking and
conditionally exceptional representative of this widely collected
series, with luminous luster resting beneath a soft veil of
sepia-toned patina. The fields remain virtually untouched by
distractions, allowing the sharply defined devices to take full
visual command. Effortlessly the finest we have handled in recent
