Description
1880 Morgan, MS66 Deep Prooflike
Conditionally Rare, Cameo Contrast
1880 $1 MS66 Deep Prooflike NGC. Ordinarily a common date,
the 1880 Morgan dollar becomes conditionally rare in MS66 with
Prooflike or Deep Prooflike fields. NGC has graded only one finer
coin. The Deep Prooflike coins are struck from working dies with
highly polished fields that contrast with the frosted devices. As
more coins are struck, the polished fields develop flowlines, which
eventually removes the reflective characteristics. This is the
reason for the rarity of Deep Prooflike coins, as the number of
coins struck is limited with the dies in a highly polished
condition. Both sides are brilliant, and the frost-white devices provide excellent contrast with the deeply reflective fields. The strike is sharp, and neither side exhibits mentionable abrasions. The great design of George T. Morgan is displayed in all its glory with this spectacular coin. NGC Census: 3 in 66, 1 finer (10/25).(Registry values: P4, N7079)
