1877-S $2 1/2 MS65 NGC....
Description
1877-S Quarter Eagle, MS65
Tied for Finest Known
1877-S $2 1/2 MS65 NGC. A moderate mintage of 35,400 quarter
eagles were struck at the San Francisco branch mint in 1877. The
total survival estimate in all grades is 1400 coins, however, at
the Gem Mint State grade the issue is extremely rare, with none
graded higher at NGC or PCGS. The 1877-S is the first quarter eagle
at the San Francisco Mint to utilize the reverse "Hub of 1859-1907"
which had been in use at the Philadelphia Mint starting in 1859.
The new reverse used a smaller S mintmark. This Gem quarter eagle has intense, frosty luster over pristine surfaces. The medium yellow-gold coloration with orange overtones is lovely. Only very small marks can be seen under magnification. Sharply struck with all design elements well-defined. Exceptional technical quality and eye appeal makes this a wonderful specimen.
