Description

1865 Three Dollar Gold, AU55
Popular Low-Mintage Issue

1865 $3 AU55 PCGS. Ex: D.L. Hansen Collection. The 1865 is one of the most challenging issues in the three dollar series with an emission of just 1,140 pieces. Bowers and Winter (2005) estimate that only 100 examples have survived in all grades, with just 12 to 15 pieces known in Uncirculated grades. That significantly revises the long-accepted estimate by Akers (1979), who wrote that he had seen only "two full Mint State pieces." The high grade rarity of this issue is significant, and it is more elusive in mint condition than some of the later, lower mintage, issues such as the 1881 and 1885. This impressive Choice AU specimen exhibits just a touch of wear on the strongly impressed design elements and the lightly abraded orange-gold surfaces retain traces of original mint luster in sheltered areas. Population: 15 in 55, 32 finer (10/25).(Registry values: N2998)
