1877-CC $10 AU55 NGC. Winter 1-A....
Description
1877-CC Eagle, AU55
Third-Lowest Mintage CC Eagle
Tied for Second or Third Finest Known
1877-CC $10 AU55 NGC. Winter 1-A. Yellow-gold fields are
attractively complemented by peach-gold, both on the devices
themselves, and in a wonderful halo around the eagle. Moderate
abrasions are present on both sides, but only a few vertical marks
in front of the nose are individually notable. Striking weakness
did not efface any detail, and only minor wear is present on the
curls around the ear and on the eagle's neck. The 1877-CC is the third-lowest mintage Carson City eagle, with only 3,332 coins produced. Only the 1878-CC and 1879-CC were produced in smaller quantities, numbering 3,244 and 1,762 eagles, respectively. In their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins 1795-1933, Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth declare this as the second rarest date of the decade after the 1879-CC, suggesting that the present offering edges out the 1878-CC for the title of second rarest Carson City eagle. The extent of the surviving population is estimated at 50 to 70 examples, placing this issue firmly among the rare date and mintmark combinations of Liberty Head eagles.
After a single Unc. Details certification from NGC, the highest certified graded examples comprise a pair of AU58 certifications at both PCGS and NGC. One AU55+ PCGS is next, followed by two AU55 PCGS and nine AU55 NGC certifications, the latter of which include the present coin. Overseas importations have resulted in a slight increase in the AU population in recent years. However, due to the high value associated with this important issue, resubmissions are all but guaranteed. Garrett and Guth report no Mint State survivors, suggest that the then-two AU58 certifications represented the same coin, and also noted the Harry Bass example at the AU55 level (now graded AU58 PCGS), with others of course possible. Therefore, depending on which data is used, this coin is either tied for second or third finest known. We have traced five individual problem-free examples at the AU55 or higher level.
