Description

1879 Seated Liberty Half Dollar, MS66
Vivid Multicolor Toning

1879 50C Closed Bud, WB-102, MS66 NGC. The surfaces are notably prooflike beneath a spectacular display of multicolor toning, yet the Closed Bud feature suggests this is a confirmed circulation strike. Longtime storage in a kraft envelope or a coin board may have induced the colorful patina. Almost overlooked is the sharp strike that exists throughout both the obverse and the reverse. This coin is a feast for the eyes and a centerpiece for the late-series "eye candy" as Eugene Gardner once called the 1879 through 1891 Seated half dollar dates. NGC Census: 38 in 66 (6 in 66+, 2 in 66 , 1 in 66+ ), 14 finer (12/25).
