The December 1890 Chapman Brothers sale of the Thomas Cleneay Collection represented one of the earliest and most complete offerings of U.S. coinage ever brought to auction. Cleneay, a Cincinnati collector active for over forty years, aimed to secure every denomination in proof or uncirculated condition, a goal he nearly achieved. His coppers were among the highlights, beginning with a remarkable run of Massachusetts silver and extending into colonial coppers, state issues, and early federal cents. The sale included Rosa Americana coins, Wood's coinage, Pitt tokens, Chalmers issues, Nova Constellatio pieces, and a notably strong selection of Connecticut, New Jersey, and Vermont coppers. These were followed by exceptional early federal cents of 1793 through 1799, many in unusually high states of preservation for the era.

Particularly notable were the 1793 cents, with Chain, Wreath, and Liberty Cap examples, several of which were highlighted for their sharp strikes and choice surfaces. The catalog continued with Condition Census-level 1794s, rare early die marriages, and an array of later Draped Bust cents, together reflecting both rarity and quality. The attention to die varieties and the presence of pedigreed pieces underscored Cleneay's role as a pioneer collector who anticipated the detailed variety studies that would later dominate the copper field. With its near-complete representation of U.S. copper coinage, the Cleneay sale became a landmark reference for specialists and marked a turning point in American numismatic history, bridging the early era of collecting with the scholarly traditions that followed.
