Description
1776 Newman 3-D Continental Dollar, MS60 PCGS
EG Fecit Signed Obverse
1776 $1 Continental Dollar, CURRENCY, Pewter, EG FECIT, N. 3-D,
W-8460, R.4, MS60 PCGS. The obverse is signed "EG FECIT" which
translates to say that someone identified as "EG" made the obverse
and numismatic scholars assume that the engraver was an individual
with those initials. The identity of EG is the burning question. We
once thought we knew the answer following Eric P. Newman's August
1959 article in The Numismatist, identifying Elisha
Gallaudet as the engraver. Newman outlined specific reasons to
accept that identification, and for many years it was accepted as
fact. The American production of these coins was similarly accepted
as fact.Alternative information is presented in a series of articles that appeared in the January 2018, July 2018, March 2022, and August 2022 issues of The Numismatist. Authors of "The Myth of the Continental Dollars" are Erik Goldstein and David McCarthy. They suggest that the identity of EG is Elias Gervais, a German engraver who served as a die cutter and mint master in Cologne from 1750 to 1777. He similarly signed his work EG or EGF. There are others who disagree with the Goldstein-McCarthy study and the investigation continues.
This lovely Mint State example has light gray toning on bluish-gray surfaces, retaining full luster and excellent eye appeal. Careful examination shows apparent clash marks at the second T in CONTINENTAL on the obverse of this historical colonial-era example. Population: 1 in 60, 38 finer (12/25). Listed on page 23 of the 2026 Guide Book.
