Description
1976 National Bicentennial Gold Medal
Swoger-52IAa, MS66 Prooflike
76 mm, Largest Diameter
Number 200 of Only 424 Issued
1976 Medal National Bicentennial Gold Medal, Large Diameter,
Swoger-52IAa, MS66 Prooflike NGC. 76 mm. 453.22 grams of .900
fine gold, equal to 13.11 ounces of pure gold. The edge shows
serial number 200. The Mint's ultimate tribute to the National
Bicentennial was this visually impressive medal designed by Chief
Engraver Frank Gasparro. This is the largest gold medal ever
produced by the U.S. Mint. It measures 76 mm in diameter and weighs
14.57 troy ounces of .900 fine gold. Celebrating LIFE, LIBERTY, AND
THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS, the medal is struck in incredibly high
relief seen on Gasparro's stylized Statue of Liberty motif design,
flanked by the dual dates 1776 and 1976. Edgar Z. Steever designed
the reverse, modeled after the U.S. Great Seal. Each medal is
numbered on the edge (this medal is number 200), with a reported
distribution of 424 medals in all, although an unknown number of
those produced were likely melted in the 1980s. This Premium Gem is
tied for the finest Prooflike example we have yet handled. NGC
reports a total of nine pieces in Prooflike and seven in Deep
Prooflike. The finest Prooflike piece is a lone MS67 coin, while
the present piece is one of three MS66 Prooflike specimens reported
(8/25). Housed in an oversized NGC holder with the edge number 200
easily visible.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# C2B4, PCGS# 523312)
