Description
Edward III (1327-1377) gold Noble ND (1361-1369) MS62 NGC, Tower mint, S-1503, N-1232, Fr-95. 7.65gm. Cross Potent mm. Treaty Period. (annulet) ЄD | WΛRD: DЄI: GRΛ: RЄX: ΛnGL': DnS: hyB' x Z (retrograde) x ΛQ | T' (double saltire stops), Edward crowned, standing facing in ship, sword in right hand, shield in left // + IhC: ΛVTЄm: TRΛnSIЄnS: PЄR: mЄDIV: ILLORVm: IBAT (double saltire stops), large floriate cross with Є at center, crowned lions in angles, all within polylobe with trefoils in spandrels.Produced during the Treaty of Brétigny wherein Edward III dropped his claim to the French throne and thus omitted his French title from his coins. Remnants of the what appears to be the reverse design can be found in places on the obverse fields, an indication of a die clash or possibly an obverse strike on top of an already existing reverse strike. An interesting wrinkle for what is a high quality Edward III Noble in Mint State condition.

Diameter: 34mm
