Description

1847-C Five Dollar, MS61
Bold North Carolina Half Eagle
Ideal High Grade Type Coin

1847-C $5 MS61 PCGS. Winter-1. There are some wide mintage fluctuations for Charlotte half eagles in the 1840s. The 1847-C has the highest mintage of any Charlotte half eagle -- 84,151 pieces were struck. Heritage records only a single die variety for that large mintage, but it would be no surprise if a second or even a third die pair awaits discovery. Most coins entered circulation and the average survivor fits into the VF to XF range. Mint State examples are rare. This sharp and colorful MS61 example is remarkably well-struck for the issue. Liberty's curls and the eagle's plumage are sharp throughout, with only a small are of weakness at the right-side horizontal shield stripes. Deep and frosty green-gold color displays occasional orange-gold accents for excellent eye appeal. PCGS Population: 6 in 61, 5 finer (8/25).(Registry values: P4)
