Description

1892-CC Double Eagle, MS62+
Attractive Eye Appeal

1892-CC $20 MS62+ PCGS. Winter 1-A. This is an early die state of Winter 1-A, the only die pairing for the year, before the die crack develops on the upper reverse. A small mintage of 27,265 twenty dollar gold coins were struck at the Carson City branch mint in 1892. The issue becomes very scarce at the MS62 grade.

Rich yellow gold has wonderful overtones of deep orange and olive for attractive eye appeal, well worthy of the coveted Plus grade. Small rim nicks are noted for accuracy on the obverse adjacent to star 13, but the rest of the obverse and reverse surfaces have just a scattering of small contact marks. The strike is solid with good definition of design details on the portrait and the eagle feathers. Radiant frosty luster swirls in cartwheels when rotated, enhancing the beauty of this excellent example. PCGS Population: 72 in 62 (6 in 62+), 6 finer (8/25).(Registry values: N4719)
