Description

1925-D Saint-Gaudens Twenty, MS63+
Heavily Melted Branch Mint Gold

1925-D $20 MS63+ NGC. Nearly 3 million 1925 Saint-Gaudens double eagles were produced at the Denver Mint, but the vast majority of those coins fell victim to the Gold Recall during the 1930s. A relatively small number of 1925-D twenties were shipped to Europe, where they were used in bank-to-bank transfers, usually acquiring small marks and abrasions along the way. Research by Roger Burdette suggests about 900 repatriated coins from foreign holdings make up 90% or so of the 1,000 pieces thought to survive today. This is a high-end Select Uncirculated example that displays NGC's Plus designation. The orange-gold surfaces are lustrous and frosty, showing minor nicks plus a mark above the knee and another hidden in the eagle's wing below T of TWENTY. Bold eye appeal remains intact.(Registry values: N4719)
