1915-S Pan-Pac Round Fifty Dollar, MS63
Beautifully Preserved Expo Relic

1915-S $50 Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Round MS63 PCGS. Ex: The Peh Family Collection. This is a highly attractive example of the round format fifty dollar gold commemorative celebrating the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. Both sides have splendid, fully brilliant yellow-gold luster with frosty surfaces. The surfaces have a few tiny blemishes, including faint hairlines on Minerva's cheek, but no significant marks of any kind.

The design for these coins was prepared by Robert Aitken. The obverse features a helmeted representation of Minerva, facing to the left, a banner at the lower right containing the date expressed in Roman numerals as MCMXV (1915). Around, the statutory legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination FIFTY DOLLARS are separated from the interior design by a circular border of beads and rectangles, with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST in the upper right field. The reverse design has the legend PANAMA-PACIFIC EXPOSITION SAN FRANCISCO set apart from the interior design by a bead and rectangle border as seen on the obverse. The right reverse field has the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM and the central motif is that of an owl, sitting on a pine branch. Small initials R.A. are hidden beneath the left end of the branch, and a similarly small S mintmark is in the lower right reverse field. This mintmark is extremely small for the size of the coin.
Both round and octagonal versions of the fifty dollar piece were coined, with a net mintage of just 483 round pieces and 645 octagonal pieces. More were actually struck, but not sold, and later melted. The number of survivors is not known today, but may be a majority of those pieces actually sold.
