Description

1842-C Quarter Eagle, AU53
Challenging Charlotte Issue

1842-C $2 1/2 AU53 NGC. Winter-1. The Charlotte Mint utilized just one die pair for the 6,729 quarter eagles struck in 1842. The majority of graded examples are XF45 and below, and Uncirculated pieces are conditional rarities as NGC and PCGS, combined, report only seven Mint State examples (10/25). This pleasing AU53 quarter eagle displays satiny green-gold patina highlighted with delicate peach hues around some of the device borders and recesses. Faint wear is observed on the device high points, and aside from a mark to the right of Liberty's neck, abrasions are light and consistent with AU-level pieces. The overall strike is above average for the issue, with all of the letters in LIBERTY clearly raised and legible. Typical softness is noted on Liberty's forehead curls and the eagle's lower legs.(Registry values: P2)
