1840 Half Eagle, MS61
Scarce and Desirable Broad Mill Variety
1840 $5 Broad Mill MS61 NGC. Rich, yellow-gold surfaces are
devoid of bothersome abrasions and cover well-struck devices. There
are two types of 1840 half eagles: Broad Mill, with a wide rim and
slightly larger diameter of 22.5mm, and Narrow Mill, with a narrow
rim and a diameter of only 21.6mm. The former variety is found on
the present offering, and is both more desirable due to its
distinctive look as well as scarcer than the Narrow Mill variety
