Winged Horse Star Stater

MYSIA. Lampsacus. Ca. 500-450 BC. EL stater (21mm, 15.28 gm). NGC Choice XF★ 5/5 - 5/5. Forepart of winged horse left, bridled, with birdlike tail at truncation, vine tendril with grape bunches around to left / Quadripartite incuse square, the interior division somewhat irregular, with two quadrants filled. SNG von Aulock 1292 var. (monogram below horse). SNG France 5, 1111. Boston MFA 1582. Traité pl. 8, 2. Well-struck devices on brilliant fields.

In this early series of staters, the winged horse should be thought of in the same genre as the winged boars, canines, bears, and felines seen on other archaic coinage of Asia Minor that have an origin in eastern mythology, as opposed to being a representation of Pegasus.
