Description

1905 Liberty Double Eagle, MS64+
Exceptional Condition Census Example

1905 $20 MS64+ PCGS. CAC. A scant mintage of only 58,919 pieces ensures the scarcity of the 1905 Liberty double eagle in high grade and makes it a sought-after date among Philadelphia coinage. The typical Mint State coin grades no finer than MS62, and MS63 or better pieces are even rarer than the certified population reports would suggest. PCGS and NGC combined report more than 100 MS63 pieces, but fewer than three dozen have appeared in our auctions during the last three decades. Similarly, the two services report 19 coins in MS64 or MS64+, but we have handled such a coin on only six prior occasions. A single MS65 NGC coin is finer.

This radiantly lustrous sun-gold piece displays exceptional eye appeal, with just a few light marks in the left obverse field and on the portrait to limit the grade. Trivial central strike softness on the high points of the devices is hardly noticed. The last MS64+ PCGS coin we handled was in our May 2022 Central States Signature, which realized $55,200.(Registry values: N7079)
