1851 Humbert Fifty Dollar, K-5, AU55
Well-Preserved and Lustrous

1851 $50 RE Humbert Fifty Dollar, Reeded Edge, 880 Thous. AU55 NGC. K-5, R.4. New dies by Albrecht Kuner allowed regular mintage of the octagonal fifties without additional punching of lettering or numbers. While the old dies were versatile to allow customized denominations it was clear the fifty dollar pieces would be the only denomination needed for the moment. The reeded edge eliminated the need for any edge device and the FIFTY DOLS. above the 1851 date numerals allowed the robust engine-turned reverse was less susceptible to wear. Not much could solve the heavy weight of these octagonal pieces and the octagonal design invited rim and corner dings. Because circulating gold coinage was in dire shortage throughout the West Coast, the cumbersome slugs joined everyday commerce and created disdain throughout the region that was desperate for smaller denomination gold coin and deprived of even the private mints debased coinage under scrutiny by James King of William's revelations based on Augustus Humbert's assays of the private minters. Bankers and merchants refused to accept private coins at par. Soon, only Moffat and Company retained the trust of bankers and the public at large. buoyed by their United States Assay Office contract. This Choice About Uncirculated Kagin-5 example features 880 Thous. gold bullion struck by the Kagin-5 dies. Unabraded, partially reflective fields display sharp edges and minimal corner contact. The orange-gold surfaces retain pleasing golden luster and the devices show only light wear and minor high-point strike weakness as nearly always present for the issue. Eye appeal for this classic Territorial gold fifty is terrific. Among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins. Listed on pages 392 and 393 in the 2026 Guide Book. NGC Census: 7 in 55, 26 finer (12/25).
