Dutch 'Reopening Maritime Commerce'
Ex: Sydney F. Martin
1596 Medal "Reopening Maritime Commerce," Silver, Betts-16B,
VF30 PCGS. Ex: Sydney F. Martin Collection. Mustard and
steel-gray surfaces contain a hint of rose and display
grade-appropriate abrasions. This medal, struck on a massive 52.2mm
double taler planchet, commemorated the inroads made by the
Netherlands in New World trade, particularly with the Portugese
before the tensions that led to the Dutch-Portuguese War. This
particular die marriage, Betts-16B, bears the date 1596. Other die
marriages bear no date or are dated 1594.Ex: The Sydney F. Martin Collection (Stack's Bowers, 8/2023), lot 8006; Auction 327 (Keunker, 10/2019), lot 4661.
