1687 Silver Shoals Treasure Recovery Medal
Clouds Variant of Betts-67

1687 Medal Silver Shoals Treasure Recovery, Silver, Gilt, Betts-67, Clouds Variant, Uncertified. 52.8 mm, 54.7 g. Champagne coloration covers unabraded surfaces. The obverse shows busts of King James II and Queen Mary of Modena. The reverse shows Sir William Phipps' salvage of the sunken Spanish treasure ship Nuestra Señora de la Concepción. This sub-variety of Betts-67, known as the clouds variant, is 2mm smaller than other Betts-67 medals, and has several design differences on the reverse: clouds have been added to the sky, more of the salvaged ship is present in the foreground, and the rocks in the sea are missing.
