Poland: Nicholas I of Russia gold 25 Zlotych 1829-FH AU55 NGC,...
Description
Nicholas I of Russia gold 25 Zlotych 1829-FH AU55 NGC, Warsaw mint, KM-C118, Bitkin-980, Fr-110. Mintage: 1,788. An outstanding example of this coveted Polish issue featuring the portrait of Russian Czar Nicholas I, showing frost and luster reminiscent of a Mint State piece, but a few heavy abrasions serve to cap the grade at the current assignment. At the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the Duchy of Warsaw was dissolved, and most of its territory became the Kingdom of Poland (Congress Poland), under the personal union with the Russian Tsar. Russia gained significant influence over this new Polish state, while Prussia acquired the western part, including the Grand Duchy of Posen, and Austria received the territory around Kraków. The city of Kraków was declared a free city under the joint protection of Russia, Prussia, and Austria. These changes curtailed Polish sovereignty, placing Polish territories under the control of neighboring powers. This period marked the beginning of a century-long struggle for Polish independence, which would eventually culminate in the re-establishment of Poland as an independent nation after World War I.
