Magnificently Rare Peter the Great Ducat Commemorating Great Northern War Battle

Peter I gold "Battle of Kalisz" Ducat 1706-Dated UNC Details (Mount Removed) NGC, Diakov-24.6 (R4) Fr-98 (Very Rare). 23mm. 3.50gm. During this period of the Great Northern War, Saxony formed a strong alliance with Russia against Sweden. Peter the Great championed a Saxon, Augustus II, for the throne of Poland; though Sweden had its own choice, Stanislaw Leszczynski. In the fall of 1706, Swedish forces occupied Saxony's major cities and forced Saxon emissaries to sign a treaty calling for Augustus to renounce the crown of Poland and for Saxony to break its alliance with Russia. The Battle of Kalisz was a decisive but short-lived victory for the anti-Swedish coalition, occurring before the effects of the Treaty of Altranstädt had taken hold across the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Despite the military triumph for Saxony and Russia, Augustus II ultimately agreed to abide by the terms of the treaty with Sweden, renouncing his claims to the Polish crown and formally severing ties with Russia for the time being.

The piece on offer here is an exorbitantly rare Ducat-sized Medal, commemorating the Russian-involved military victory over Sweden that was fought in modern day Poland, which depicts the Czar gallantly riding on horseback amidst battle. A few different versions of the Medals were created in celebration of this Russian achievement, this type being the most coin adjacent in appearance and specification. Friedberg states that medallic Ducats of this type and larger multiple Ducat sizes were "struck as a military reward for officers", listing emissions for this battle in each multiple from one to five, all accompanied by a notation of either "Very Rare" or "Extremely Rare". The closest auction comparable for any size of this type was a 5 Ducat Medal sold with Gorny & Mosch in 2006, though that piece was struck with different dies (from Diakov-24.4, signed by G. Haupt on the obverse truncation). Besides that, we are unaware of any other auction appearance of this issue that has occurred in this century.

The prior mounting on this specimen is notable, but not egregious, largely confined to the area near the rim at 12 o'clock (and presumably on the edge at this area as well), which allows the presentation of the designs to occur with minimal visual interruption. Certain distinctive similarities in the shadowing of the light from the undulations of the flan (especially on the obverse) suggest this example could be the Friedberg plate specimen, however we cannot be certain due to the limitations of the plate coin image for this type in Friedberg, and without further supporting documentation. Regardless, this is one of the rarest offerings from the Geneva Collection, one that is filled with some of the nicest Russian numismatic material available for public consumption.

UNC Details (Mount Removed) NGC。
