Astounding Peter III 5 Roubles

Peter III gold 5 Roubles 1762-CПБ MS60 NGC, St. Petersburg mint, KM-Unl, Bitkin-3 (R1), Fr-127. A major rarity in the Imperial Russian series, being the only issue of this coveted multiple Rouble denomination from the ill-fated Czar Peter III who died in the same year he ascended to the throne, only days after being overthrown by his wife Catherine II (The Great) in a palace coup d'état. This piece is one of only two examples to achieve a Mint State designation from either major grading services, both of which reside at NGC. Well-centered, sharply struck, and glowingly lustrous; this coin is of incredible quality for it's type, only a few heavier abrasions serve to cap the grade at the assigned level. It's been nearly a decade since this type (2016) crossed the auction block with Heritage; a coin of great significance in this grade that should produce inspired bidding from the country's most esteemed collectors.
