Irregular Date, 13 Stars Reverse

1799 $1 Irregular Date, 13 Stars Reverse, B-13, BB-151, R.5, VF30 PCGS. Ex: The Peh Family Collection. Bowers-Borckardt Die State II. Deep gray and blue toning in the fields lightens in areas, providing the only remnants of an old cleaning. Gray high points provide strong contrast on each side. The most obvious mark is a long, shallow scratch below the IB in LIBERTY. This "Irregular Date" variety is rare, with only 40-75 examples extant, according to Bowers, most of which are clustered in the VF grade range. An important opportunity for the early dollar specialist.
