Catherine II gold 5 Roubles 1762-CПБ AU58 NGC, St. Petersburg mint, KM-C78.2, Bitkin-6 (R1), Fr-130. The "heavy" two-year sub-type within the Catherine the Great 5 Rouble series before the weight of the issue was reduced from 8.27 grams to 6.54 grams. Despite only an R1 rarity designation from Bitkin, it is notably infrequent to see examples of this first-year issue at such a pronounced level of quality appear at market. A specimen at this elite of quality has not been offered at public auction in many years, making this the opportune time for a collector seeking an upgrade of this date. Heritage has only once before presented this issue for sale nearly 20 years ago, an amazing NGC MS65 piece in 2007; the present specimen is at the second highest grade at NGC behind that Gem. The competition for this lot could be as intense as it will be for some of the highest dollar offerings in this collection.
