Description
Gorgeous Matte Romanov Dynasty Medal
Nicholas II gold Matte "Romanov Dynasty Tricentennial" Medal
1913-Dated MS64 NGC, Diakov-1550.2 (R3), Smirnov-1473b. 32.5mm.
25.54gm. Dies by P. Stadnitsky (unsigned). Nicholas II made a grand
spectacle of the 300-Year Anniversary of the House of Romanov
rising to power in Russia, starting with Michael Feodorovich who
was elected Czar in 1613, succeeding the House of Rurik. A special,
one-year Rouble issue was created, and a number of different Medals
were struck to celebrate this occasion. Alas, the Romanov Dynasty
would soon end with Nicholas II, as he abdicated the throne as a
result of the February Revolution in 1917, and was later executed
by the Bolsheviks in 1918.This is a beautifully executed Medal, the Matte surfaces providing the perfect canvas for the tasteful, regal designs. The near-Gem assignment is appropriate for this example, as the crisp surfaces are largely pristine except for the occasional abrasion. This is the only gold example of the issue currently certified at either major grading service. A rare opportunity for Russian Medal enthusiasts to acquire an Imperial piece struck with Matte surfaces.
