1880 $2 1/2 MS65 NGC....
Description
1880 Quarter Eagle, MS65
Condition Census Rarity
1880 $2 1/2 MS65 NGC. Bright, frosty luster and a bold
strike with semireflective fields adorn this Gem example. A few
minor abrasions are noted, but these hardly detract from the fresh
appearance. When we first handled this piece in the late 1990s,
only 14 Mint State examples of the date had been certified. Today,
several dozen Mint State certifications are reported, but the
majority are in MS62 and lower grades. Gems are rare, and NGC and
PCGS each report only a single numerically finer representative
(10/25). We last handled an MS65 example of the 1880 quarter eagle
more than two decades ago, in 2004. We have never handled a finer
example. NGC Census: 3 in 65, 1 finer (10/25).Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 6/1998), lot 6276.(Registry values: P2)
