1854-D $3 AU50 NGC. Winter 1-A....
Description
1854-D Three Dollar, AU50
Dahlonega Mint Rarity
1854-D $3 AU50 NGC. Winter 1-A. From a minuscule mintage of
1,120 pieces, perhaps no other D-mint issue captures the
imagination of Southern gold enthusiasts like the 1854-D three
dollar. Both a first year and one-year type, the issue's tiny
original production and low survival rate long secured its place
among the numismatically elite Dahlonega gold coins. A perusal of
Heritage auction records also shows that survivors are often
damaged or harshly cleaned. This lightly circulated example has
escaped such distractions. It is well defined for an 1854-D and
retains glimpses of luster in the areas surrounding the devices. A
few shallow blemishes are clustered in the lower left obverse field
and faint die clashing is noticed on the reverse. Census: 10 in 50,
