Description

1884 Three Dollar, PR61 Cameo
Low Total Mintage Date

1884 $3 PR61 Cameo PCGS. JD-1, High R.4. For the first time, proof three dollar gold pieces exceeded 100 pieces struck when the 1884 issue numbered 109 proofs produced. Perhaps 55 to 70 of those pieces survive today. According to John Dannreuther, despite the slightly larger mintage, 1884 proof three dollar coins appear less often at auction than its immediate predecessors including the 1882 and 1883 three dollar pieces (proofs and circulation strikes combined). This light, yellow-gold 1884 proof example displays flashy mirrors and enough contrast to earn the PCGS Cameo designation. Some light field chatter limits the numeric grade, but the overall appearance subjectively exceeds the assigned grade.(Registry values: N2998)
