Description
1885-CC Double Eagle, AU50
Four-Figure Mintage, Luster Remains
1885-CC $20 AU50 NGC. Winter 1-A. The Carson City Mint
ceased coin production in March 1885 with the advent of the Grover
Cleveland administration. Although its mintage was small -- only
9,450 pieces were struck -- the 1885-CC double eagle was shipped in
quantity overseas, and small groups have returned to U.S. shores.
Circulated examples also exist, and are more likely pieces saved
from domestic use in commerce. This pleasing AU50 example displays
glints of original mint luster, with lilac patina dappling the
orange-gold surfaces. Smooth, sharply struck surfaces reveal a
scattering of tiny marks under magnification alongside faint
circulation wear. The eye appeal is excellent for the assigned
grade.(Registry values: N2998)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26BN, PCGS# 9004, Greysheet# 9941)
